| Background: | Most folks think that logos are only for businesses. That's just simply not true. Not true, not true, not true. If you've heard me say it once, you've heard me say it a million times, personal branding is important. One component of personal branding, is a personal logo. Like today's logo for the Orange Shirt Guy. You can do it too. |

The advertising industry is the greatest. It’s not anything like what you see on Madmen, so any of you hoping to suck on heaters all day, sipping cognac, and spend the day looking for your next one-night-stand are in for a bit of disappointment. Sorry. It’s just not the way things are nowadays.
But, if you have the creative bug, there is no better place to get your fix. Most agencies are littered with creativity triggers, from Ping Pong tables to full-service bars. It’s like working in an adult playground. And, if creativity is a passion of yours, then each day is like a day at the zoo. What I mean by that is, it’s not work. Or, at least, it doesn’t seem like work.
Personally, I’m addicted to advertising. I find it to be one of the most exciting things eva. Well, I guess that might be a bit much. I’ll just say that it’s super cool. My home office is plastered with old vintage ads, that’s how much of a homer to advertising I am.
Knowing that, you won’t be surprised that I get excited when I run into someone that’s either in advertising or in school to get into advertising. It’s an instant connection in my book.
Today’s logo is for a guy the world refers to as Burton Hohman (like the snowboards, only he’s from Florida, where there is no snow). Lately, Mr. Hohman has been going by the name, Orange Shirt Guy. It’s not so much a name as it is a personal brand.
The name (or brand name rather) came from none other than our fearless, t-shirt wearing, Floridian partner, Jason Sadler. Several months back, Jason was speaking (he’s a big shot you know) at the University of Florida, to their advertising students (one of which was Burton Hohman), when Jason called on Burton by referring to him as the Orange Shirt Guy. The name stuck.
The Orange Shirt Guy is an advertising student, fan of legos, Star Wars fanatic and all around good guy. He also does something that I find incredibly cool, stop motion videos. If you haven’t seen this before, you’ll want to check out some of his work on YouTube.
As any good personal brander does, Orange Shirt Guy also has a blog. If you think it’s about his love of orange shirts, you’d be completely wrong. He’s building his brand in advertising, so it’s appropriately focused on his life and thoughts as an advertising major at the University of Florida (which coincidentally also sports a fancy orange color).
Logos for personal brands are always a bit tricky. Or, at least designing a graphical representation is tricky. I mean, it’s not like he sells hot dogs. That would be easy, we somehow reference hot dogs. That said, we received good direction from Orangey, which made things much easier.
I encourage you all to visit his blog today, browse his stop motion videos and connect with him on Twitter. And, for my sake, reassure him that advertising is where it’s at.
